Celebrating Black History Month

One of my priorities as a future educator (Middle School History and English) is to ensure that Black history will be taught and celebrated all through out the year not just focused on in one month. I will teach a history of resistance that shows the tapestry of our multilingual, multicultural nation. One that represents all the students in my classroom and helps us grow in empathy and understanding that everyone’s view point is valid and we must learn the history of different people groups from members of those groups. My classroom will be one that envisions and puts into practice a new society where instead of white supremacy, all people’s are celebrated and empowered to be fully who they are.

One of my priorities now and throughout my life is to educate myself and my community about the resistance, rich history, and injustices against the Black community that have happened and are happening today. Right now I am reading a book called “Stamped from the Beginning: The Definite History of Racist Ideas in America” by Ibram X. Kendi. The author lays out the multifaceted racism that is going on in America and how racism is being used to keep people divided. Give it a read or listen!

Also, I always want to make clear that Jesus was and is Middle Eastern/non-white and was born on the margins of society. Until Jesus followers stop to go to and listen, spend time with, and learn from the voices of the marginalized in society (‘Christian’ or not – Black, Latinx, Asian Pacific Islander, immigrant, disabled, LGBTQIA+, houseless, detainee/inmate) about who God is, we are missing out on the fullness of who God is!

Let’s all help each other.

Check out some good music that is full of truth~
